FLYING WITH DOGS

At FLYINGGROUP, we believe dogs are more than companions, they’re part of the family. And as such, they deserve the same care, comfort, and consideration when flying as any other passenger. One of the advantages of private aviation is that your dog can stay with you in the cabin, close, calm and safe. But to make every journey a success, there are a few essentials to keep in mind.

Early socialization

The most important tip I can give? If possible, introduce your pup early on to what is is to soar the skies together. Going from the boarding process, to being on the apron, going up the stairs and relaxing in the cabin. All these spaces can induce stress when they are unfamiliar. Furthermore, the engine sounds, ascending or descending movements, turbulence and landing… all of these are unique to flying and can be quite strange for a dog to experience. You’ll help your pup so much in life by introducing these early on, for short and sweet flights, building up to longer more challenging flights.

Protect Those Ears

Take care of your dog’s ears. Although private jets are very silent compared to commercial flights, keep in mind that your dog’s hearing is many times more sensitive than yours! Furthermore, changes in cabin pressure during take-off and landing can cause discomfort. Special ear covers, properly fitted to your dog’s size and shape, help muffle sharp sounds and reduce the impact of pressure shifts. The fit is most important, and since dogs skulls can vary a lot, even within the same breed, these should always be selected and fitted individually, with professional guidance if needed. Prepare your dog before the flight by including the ear protection in trainingsesssions at home, building up the time as needed.  The result is a calmer, safer, and more comfortable travel companion.

The Power of Scent

Stress in dogs often comes from unfamiliar environments. Bringing a blanket, soft crate, or even a favourite toy that smells like home creates a safe haven on board. Choose a calm, low-traffic corner of the cabin and make it theirs, somewhere to retreat when the world feels overwhelming.

Move Before You Fly

A good walk or play session before boarding is one of the best ways to ensure a peaceful flight. Don’t forget to stimulate your furry friend’s brain too! Sniff safaris (a walk dedicated to sniffing), training sessions or puzzles, really help you out by tiring the brain. Exercise of mind and body helps reduce anxiety and promotes calm behaviour in the air.

Hydration Matters

Cabin air tends to be dry, especially for pets. Always travel with a spill-proof water bowl and offer your dog small amounts of water throughout the flight. Some dogs will channel stress into compulsive over drinking, be mindful and correct this behaviour if needed. The right bowl will help you a long way.

Chewing lowers stress

Chewing is a powerful stress reliever for dogs. It’s not just about keeping their jaws busy; chewing actually triggers the release of calming hormones that help your dog relax. Providing appropriate chew toys or natural chews can keep your dog occupied while also helping them stay calm and satisfied.

A light snack just before take-off can also ease pressure discomfort, keep them settled and link the space positively. Choose materials that aid in stress relief, for example chews that contain hemp.

Calm Energy, Calm Dog

Dogs mirror our mood. Stay relaxed, use a reassuring tone, and avoid sudden changes in energy or noise levels. Because dogs are very prone to routine, it can help to stick to your dog’s normal rhythm, if they usually nap in the afternoon, don’t change that pattern just because you’re flying. Big changes in diet are not ideal before flying as stress combined with new foods can cause an upset tummy.

Travel Smart

Use a secure, well-fitted harness during the flight and avoid sudden movements or repositioning. Safety and comfort go hand in hand, especially when you’re thousands of feet above the ground.

Designed with Dogs in Mind

To help make flying even more comfortable for your four-legged friend, together with the team of FLYINGGROUP, I’ve developed the FLYINGGROUP Pet Kit, a bespoke travel companion for your pet. Thoughtfully created for FLYINGGROUP passengers, it includes practical and comforting items to support your dog’s well-being throughout the journey. While it doesn’t include ear covers, since those must be perfectly fitted to each individual dog, it’s packed with helpful tools to ease travel-related stress and enhance inflight relaxation.

Flying with your dog should be joyful, not stressful. With the right preparation and a little insider knowledge, your pet can enjoy the skies just as much as you do.
